The man in refusing to give the Nazi salute is August Landmesser. The photo was taken on 13 June 1936. At the time he was in a relationship with a Jewish woman, Irma Eckler. After this photo was taken, he was imprisoned before being drafted into military service where he was during the war. Eckler meanwhile was sent to a concentration camp to meet her tragic fate.
